DEFINITION
A resting hand splint is an Orthosis which is designed to reduce pain and swelling by providing comfortable support and immobilization in the natural position to joints of the hand, wrist, fingers and thumb.
It also reduces and prevents painful contractions that can accompany the post-stroke recovery process.
Resting Splints are usually made from a moulded thermoplastic which are fitted with velcro fastening straps and are usually made specially for a particular patient by a physiotherapist or Orthotist.
2 MAIN TYPES OF SPLINTS.
- The splint that is used while resting the joints of the hand and
- The wrist splint that is used to support the hand and the wrist while working.
Whichever type of splint you use, it’s best not to wear it all the time as this can increase stiffness in your joints.
CARING FOR THE SPLINT/ YOUR HAND
- Use warm water with mild detergent.
- Clean the Resting Splint by wiping it with a damp cloth and then dry it with a towel.
- Please don’t wear your splint all the time, because your joints may become stiff.
- You should not wear a working splint overnight unless your therapist or orthotist advises you to wear it.
- When you take the splint off, make sure you do some gentle wrist, finger and thumb exercises to help stop your joints from stiffening up.
WHEN NOT TO WEAR A SPLINT
- When it rubs on you or causes you pain.
- When it doesnβt fit anymore or is worn out.
- When the splint leaves red marks.
If your skin is sore when you wear your splint then quickly contact our experts or the therapist that issued the splint.
HOW TO WEAR THE RESTING SPLINT.
- Open the straps, and place your hand into the splint so that it’s in contact with the palm of your hand and there is no space between your wrist and the splint.
- Then, make sure that your thumb is also in contact with the material. Close up the straps not too tight, starting with the straps nearest to your elbow.
